If a fan is not working properly, it may become noisier as it works to maintain the machine at the optimal operating temperature. If the fan stops working altogether, the laptop may freeze, display a "blue screen of death" error or spontaneously shut down. Gateway laptop fans are connected to a heat sink that helps cool the internal components. The fan and heat sink are attached, so you must remove and replace them as a unit. 1. Turn off the laptop and disconnect all cords, including the power cord. Close the screen if it is open. 2. Turn the laptop over so the bottom is facing up. Press the locks on the battery to disengage them, and then remove the battery. 3. Remove the screws securing the fan compartment cover. You can see the fan through the vents in this portion of the bottom casing.

4. Remove the screws securing the heat sink and fan assembly to the motherboard. 5. Disconnect the white connector attached to the motherboard. 6. Gently pull the heat sink and fan out of the laptop. 7. Apply a thin coating of heat sink compound, also known as thermal paste, to the bottom of the new heat sink unit. 9. Refasten the screws to secure the fan unit. 10. Put the fan compartment cover back on the laptop and secure the screws. The CPU and GPU cooling fans connect directly to the motherboard via a cable running from the fan. When CPU and GPU chips get hotter, the cooling fan spins faster. On some laptops the cooling fan can be easily accessed through a door on the bottom, as on the following Gateway laptop. If you cannot find it on the bottom, then it’s buried inside the case, as on the following Dell laptop. If your laptop feels very hot and shuts down without any warning, it’s possible that you have a faulty fan. Listen for the fan. Sometimes you can see the fan through the fan grill on the bottom of the laptop. Can you see the fan spinning? If the fan never starts, probably it is bad and has to be replaced. When the fan bearing goes bad, the fan starts making grinding noise. In this case you’ll have to replace the fan. If your CPU fan works hard all the time, most likely it happens because the heatsink is dirty and is clogged with dust and lint. You can clean the heatsink using compressed air.

The exact same thing happened to my computer. I read on another site that you should turn off your computer and unplug it. Then turn it back on and make sure you press Fn and F6 at the same time as your computer is starting up. It worked for me! I broke the screen to my Gateway so I gave it to a friend to replace. He is actually licenced through them to fix there computers or something like that. I got it back only to find out that after turning it on nothing happens... The LED light comes on and I can hear the fan going but nothing happens.
