A Thorough Spring Cleaning Checklist My sofas are gross. Like, I can't believe I'm about to show you this before picture sort of gross. That arm isn't wet, it's just that dirty.  I know it's gross, don't judge me. I'd tried to clean them many times, but to no avail. Until I found the answer on pinterest!  Robin from Chris and Robin's Nest shared her technique for cleaning microfiber sofas, and friends, it works. Here's what my sofas look like now: And by sofas, I mean that one arm of one sofa.  Because about 3 minutes into me focusing half my attention on something other than the children, pandemonium erupted. Here's what my sponge looked like after just that one arm of the sofa.  Can you say yuck? I love my little kitty cat; he is the fluffiest, snuggliest little baby I know, but he has decided that my couch is his litterbox.

Any time I leave him alone, he pees on the cushion. It’s weird because he very rarely does it anywhere else! I’m working on getting him to stop- I’ve used pheremores, I lock him up while I’m gone during the day- but if you have any other suggestions, please let me know. I have taken him to the vet and they said nothing is wrong with him- it is just behavioral. I’m really sad because I feel like my couch is being ruined. So, I combed the internet for cleaning techniques. My couch is microfiber and from Ashley Furniture. I desperately want a new couch, but am afraid that he will ruin it immediately. So, in the meantime, here is what I do to clean it: As soon as you discover the “accident,” use paper towels to soak up as much as possible. Luckily, Cesar usually doesn’t go very much- another clue to me that this is just behavioral. As soon as possible, fully saturate the area with an enzyme cleaner. I like Nature’s Miracle. Follow the directions on the bottle, but some say to use a white rag to soak up the moisture after 5-10 minutes.

If you want to do a deep cleaning, take the cushion covers off of the couch & run them through the washer with 1 cup of vinegar. Unfortunately my cushion covers are sewn to the foam cushion and you can’t take them off without ruining the couch. Take the cushions off of the couch. I set mine on my screened porch. Spray with a mixure of 1/2 white vinegar, 1/2 warm water. I sprayed until they were very wet all over. 5. Then, sprinkle the entire cushion with baking soda. I sprinkled heavily, using a whole box on the 2 cushions. 6. Let sit for at least an hour- I left mine over night.I used the brush attachment and vaccumed slowly, twice in each direction (vertical & horizontal). Then I placed the cushions back on the couch. 8. Optional- I scotch guarded my whole couch again once I got it clean. This will hopefully help in the future (it was also scotch guarded when I bought it about a year and a half ago.) 9. Finally, I sprayed the whole thing heavily in Febreeze.

How to Clean Velvet Furniture Velvet fabric can be a bit trickier to clean than other fabrics because, in addition to removing the stain, you must take care to avoid "crushing" the nap of the fiber.

Here are some tips to help you successfully remove stains without damaging your beautiful furniture. It is important to verify the type of material on your furniture before cleaning it. At Roger + Chris, we most regularly use cotton and polyester velvets. Professional cleaning is recommended for larger or more prominent stains, but cotton and particularly polyester velvets can be cleaned at home with care. Do not attempt to clean acetate, rayon, or silk velvets. They are very sensitive and easily damaged during cleaning. Some cleaning specialists warn that cotton velvet fabric may kink during cleaning, so use caution and wet the fabric no more than necessary. Cleaning Velvet Furniture with Upholstery Cleaner You can use upholstery cleaner like Woolite to clean cotton or polyester velvet. Test the cleaner on a discrete area, like the back or underside of the sofa. Check to make sure it does not discolor the material or damage it in any way. Carefully apply the upholstery cleaner to the velvet with a soft sponge, leaving the velvet's pile undisturbed.

After it is clean, be sure to vacuum and brush the velvet a number of times to keep the velvet looking neat. Note: Woolite also has a foam product with integrated brush designed for cleaning furniture that may prove useful. The Wet Method for Cleaning Velvet Furniture If liquid has spilled onto the velvet, soak it up with a paper towel or cloth. Make sure there is no food or debris left on the cloth. Combine a small amount of dish soap and water in a bucket, mixing it until it becomes sudsy. Soak the cloth in the sudsy water and apply it gently to the stain. Use the sudsy cloth to blot the stain until it disappears. It is important for the velvet fabric to dry quickly. Use a hair dryer or fan to accelerate the drying process. The Dry Method for Cleaning Velvet Furniture If the fabric is wet, use a paper towel or soft cloth to soak up the liquid. Apply dry cleaning detergent to a sponge and blot the stain repeatedly. Let the cleanser dry entirely on the fabric, using a hair dryer or fan to dry it as quickly as possible.
