"A textile dry cleaner can take the piece to the spotting board and, working with a steam gun and an air gun, he can move the stains through the area.

Leather isn't as porous."And that's also why it costs so much more to clean leather garments. For example, Barry Regent charges $4.50 to clean a wool jacket and $30 to clean a leather one; cleaning a wool skirt costs $4, while a leather one will run $25 to $27.You can't predict exactly how any leather garment will react to cleaning beforehand, which is why most dry cleaners will insist that you sign a release before they'll touch your garment.Tricky businessThis doesn't mean you have to settle for wearing a grungy jacket or pants-leather can be cleaned successfully by a skilled professional. But here's what you can expect:- The cleaning process usually causes leather to lose dye, so your garment may come back less vibrantly colored. That's why the Leather Apparel Association recommends having matching garments cleaned at the same time.- Many leather garments are made from several animals, and it's possible that each hide will react differently to the cleaning process. For example, one piece of hide may lose more color than another.

A good leather cleaner will try to rematch each piece in the finishing process, but you do run a risk that it might not be possible. (Generally speaking, your risk in this and other aspects of cleaning is greater if the garment is of relatively low quality.)- Hides are usually far from perfect in appearance, so some leather manufacturers use wax-based fillers to cover up these imperfections, giving the garments a smooth, nearly perfect look. These fillers usually dissolve in the cleaning process, so your garment will probably have a slightly more "distressed" look when it comes back from the cleaners.There are several ways you can make life a little easier on the leather cleaner. Take your garment in as soon as possible after it's stained, and try to be specific about what type of stain you've got, urges Bob Stewart, owner of the Leather Cleaner in Willowbrook (one of the few retail leather-cleaning services in the Chicago area). Time is particularly of the essence with food oil stains, because they oxidize on leather over time, and become permanently set.
