CAUTION: Never use window cleaner, ammonia products, or other chemical sprays on acrylic! Distinctive LUCITE™ PLEXIGLAS™ acrylic furniture and accessories can last an eternity with minimal care and maintenance. Acrylic care consists of no more than normal wipe-cleaning to keep it looking new – but care should be taken to avoid scratches. Acrylic is also stable when exposed to sunlight, so it will not yellow or crack even when used in normal outdoor environments. Use only a very soft damp cloth when cleaning acrylic surfaces. It is possible to scratch acrylic, so NEVER use any scouring compounds or chemical cleaners such as Windex or other glass cleaners (even if they are environmentally friendly, organic or non-scented). Should anything ever stick to an acrylic surface (such as an adhesive label or gummy substance) do not use any type of solvent. Never use the same cloth that you clean other household items with – it can retain dirt, grit, and chemical residues that may harm your acrylic items.
We recommend using a new or separate cloth for your acrylic care. However, scratches do happen – but don’t worry! Unlike other materials, scratches on acrylic can be easily removed with Novus products. I have such a weakness for the stuff that I have had to put myself on a Lucite diet — only one small piece per room — lest I cross over into full-on Liberace circa 1974 mode.best way to clean dirty boat seats While there are so many fantastic pieces of Lucite being sold right now (check out Furniture Focus: Acrylic and Lucite Furniture), my particular penchant is for the vintage pieces.best dryer vent cleaning kit As Anna pointed out last week in her fantastic post Quick History: Lucite, this magical material has been used in furnishings and décor since its introduction in 1937. As a result, it’s relatively easy to find some really unique antique and vintage Lucite pieces to call your own.
What I’ve struggled with, however, is finding a way to clean and/or repair all the little scratches and dings that inevitably occur with older Lucite pieces. Products like Brillianize claim to be made especially to clean and polish Lucite and acrylic to a glossy sheen, but I wonder how effective — and more importantly, how safe to use— they really are. Do you love vintage Lucite? How do you keep your pieces in tip-top shape? Have you had any Lucite cleaning disasters? Share your hard-won wisdom with us! Image: Benjamin Moore via DecorPad and Style at HomeLucite is a brand name for Acrylic. Other brand names for Acrylic include Plexiglas and Polycast. Over the years the words Acrylic and Lucite have become synonyms. Acrylic was first introduced by the Rohm and Haas Company in 1933 (Plexiglas). While it looks like glass, it is stronger and about half the weight. Acrylic is also crystal clear. Acrylic sheets can be cut, beveled, polished, and even formed in ovens to make from beautiful Acrylic Awards to stunning Acrylic furniture.
Acrylic sheets can also be cut for windows, airplane windshields, cubes and Acrylic works of art such as Sculptures. Special care must be taken when cleaning acrylic products. You should avoid household cleaners like Windex, 409, and Fantastik. The chemicals in these products can dull and craze the Acrylic. The best way to care for your Acrylic products, whether it be Acrylic furniture or Acrylic awards, is to clean with warm water and a small amount of liquid soap such as Ivory, rinse and dry. Always use a soft cloth as not to scratch the Acrylic surface. Items made out of Acrylic can sometimes scratch. Small or fine scratches can easily be removed by using products like Novus 2. For deeper scratches you might need to sand and/or polished them out with a buffing wheel. You can buy buffing and scratch removal kits from a company, like Craftics.
